Before adoption, our cats are neutered if possible, tested for FIV and FeLV, vaccinated against cat flu, cat disease and rabies, chipped (including EU pet passport) and treated against parasites.
For our Greek cats, this already costs us around €190 per cat. In addition, there are additional costs for medical care, as most of the cats are very sick when they are found. Transport to Germany incurs costs of at least €90 per cat. In order to be able to retroactively cover at least part of these costs, at least €280 per cat, which arise before the placement, we charge a flat-rate expense allowance. The so-called protection fee.
Yes, we charge the protection fee in full, even if an old four-legged friend or dog/cat with disabilities moves into its new home. We do not differentiate between "used", "broken" or "whole" - for us every animal has its full value. And should there actually be an increase in individual income, this will flow back into the additional costs of another candidate.
Despite the nominal fees, we are still not able to fully cover the costs incurred and therefore always rely on additional donations. You can see a rough list of our costs up to the point of adopting a dog here:
per vaccination (if necessary 2-3x): 30 euros
Pass: 20 euros
Worm treatment: 10 euros
Spot-On: 15 euros
Micro transponder chip: 25 euros
Castration male / female 90 euros / 130 euros
Mediterranean check (from 5 months): 100 euros
Transport costs (depending on kg): 160-180 euros
For a puppy weighing 5 kg, for example, the cost is around 300 euros, for an adult bitch weighing 17 kg it is around 510 euros. As you can see, the calculation does not include additional medical costs (such as medication, therapy, x-rays, operations), nor the expenses for food or boarding accommodation.
This expense allowance does not cover all of the costs incurred. However, in order not to let them become too high, we cover the majority of the treatment costs with the help of donations. If you as the owner were to have your veterinarian carry out all of these necessary basic examinations at your own expense, the treatment costs would be significantly higher than our reimbursement.
Even if the protection fee may seem high at first, it is still the cheaper option for you as the owner.
Since this fee must be used to offset costs that have already been incurred, it is not negotiable under any circumstances and will not be refunded. The animal protection association Pangea e.V. is a private, non-profit organization. We do not receive any public subsidies and finance our animal placement exclusively through donations and protection fees.
